Collection: Flower Universe
The Flower Universe is a jewellery collection shaped by designer Charmain’s lifelong relationship with batik—a visual language rooted in his upbringing in Pekalongan, a city closely linked to batik traditions. The intricate patterns of batik were never merely decorative; they offered him a way of seeing the world—a world in which forms, meanings, and identities interlace, shift, and evolve.
At the centre of the collection is Sekar Jagad, a Central Javanese batik motif whose name combines jagad (world, in Javanese) and kaart (the Dutch word for “map”). Often read as a stylised world map or poetically understood as “flower of the world,” the motif carries a dual symbolism—reflecting harmony through diversity, and tradition in motion.
Historically used in ceremonial textiles, Sekar Jagad evokes cosmological balance and interconnectedness. Its radial, map-like structure became a symbol of unity, gaining prominence during the Mataram Sultanate period in the 17th century. This resonance remains vital today.
Drawing from this foundation, The Flower Universe comprises various botanical families rendered in silver and freshwater pearls. Each piece reimagines floral forms using filigree, granulation, and wirework techniques that convey both delicacy and strength, echoing batik’s structural intricacy.
Rather than a direct translation of textile into metal, this collection is a quiet meditation on what is inherited and reinterpreted. It asks how symbols persist, adapt, and bloom anew across materials, geographies, and generations.
The Flower Universe is both a garden and a cartography of memory—an evolving archive of pattern and meaning, shaped by a maker attentive to the layered poetics of craft.
